The NAPA Trick Truck Award
14th Southeastern Nationals
Charlotte, N.C.

When Jack Roush, founder of Roush Racing (now Roush Fenway Racing), speaks, people listen. John Black, of Holly Springs, N.C., did and Roush’s advice has helped his 1935 Ford Pickup take home numerous awards including the NAPA Trick Truck Award at the 14th Southeastern Nationals in Charlotte, N.C., Oct. 26-28.

The truck was primarily built by Bugzy’s Hot Rods based in Leland, N.C. Bugzy’s shop manager Dennis Hale has a close relationship with Roush resulting in one of Roush’s famed 402 engines with a TCU transmission being used in the rebuild. Additionally, Roush suggested that Hale and Black move away from the standard black paint job to a custom mix.

Black, a Goodguys member for seven years, accessorized the truck with Billet Specialties wheels and a steering wheel, a Fatman Frame, Bose sound system and a California Customs interior. The truck’s traditional “wear” parts are replaced at the NAPA AUTO PARTS store in Wilmington, N.C.

Black’s custom pickup was named the Ford-in-a-Ford pick at the Columbus, Ohio, show in 2006, the Magnificent Masterpiece winner at Charlotte in 2006 and Jacksonville, Fla., in 2007. Additionally, the truck was also featured in Street Trucks magazine in August 2007.

The trip to Charlotte netted Black a $100 NAPA gift certificate for tools from the on-site NAPA Tool & Equipment tent. In addition to the NAPA gift certificate, Black also received:

  • Goodguys Rod & Custom Association Award
  • A die-cast model of the NAPA Overhaulin’ Delivery Truck
  • A NAPA hat, t-shirt and grease towel
